Motorola has just announced the DROID Ultra and the Moto X which is said to be their last push to come back into the game they once ruled. Motorola Droid Ultra is the thinnest Droid till date with its thickness being just 7.18 mm. The phone packs a cool Kevlar glossy shell casing that feels pretty nice in your hands. Motorola is quoted saying “it is all about thin”. Well then the design just holds a lot in store.
It takes something to introduce a thin smartphone not because of the entire structure but because of so many components inside that go into making what it is. Motorola DROID Ultra is the thinnest phone in town with thickness of 7.18 mm, even thinner than the 7.6 mm iPhone 5 by Apple. The phone curves horizontally from the camera region at the back and does so till the middle, but it is simply flat at the bottom half. The Kevlar shell is glossy and pretty solid. Volume rockers and the lock screen button are on the top left edge of the phone.
Motorola DROID Ultra has a Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display. It is a 720p HD display which is quiet evenly lit and colours look really accurate and uniform on it. The size of the display is 5.0 inches and packs a pixel density of 294ppi. Resolution of the display is 720×1280 pixels. You get Corning Gorilla Glass protection and the body is said to be splash proof as well. Navigation buttons are capacitive buttons built into the display. A feature by Motorola the “Active Display” just lights up only a certain part of your screen for important notifications and hence saving crucial battery.
The thinnest DROID in town comes with a 10 mega pixel autofocus rear/primary camera and a 2 mega pixel front facing camera. The lens is capable of carrying out touch to focus and detect faces. Video recording can be done in full HD 1080p quality hence streaming them to your TV will also give you a nice experience of the video you captured. You can flip the phone down and up to reveal the camera without touching the screen, it still is not really accurate and does not show the camera always. LED Flash allows you to capture images in low or no lighting at all.
Motorola DROID Ultra is said to have the Android v4.2.2 Jelly Bean. We are still unaware if they will get the newly released Android v4.3 Jelly Bean. Motorola has introduced a whole bunch of features that are very useful with the software. We talked about the active display in display section, then there is the Quick Capture. Droid Zap allows you to share images within just 300 feet of you and you can just swipe to share media. Most of its usual functioning can be carried out by talking to the phone like looking for notifications or make phone calls, something many phones can also do in this era.
The new droid will be having a Dual Core 1.7 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor. It comes with 2GB of RAM too. You get a fixed memory of 16GB with no external card slot. Best part of the phone is that it provides you with 28 whooping hours of talktime! And up to 310 hours of standby time with the 2130 mAh battery. How the phone holds out from time to time- that only time shall tell. Most Android phones start to degrade in performance in time but we hope this one stands.
We loved the few useful things they have done with the software by introducing some actually handy features. The body is well designed and the 5 inch display fits just correctly. For now it will only release in the USA with more countries to come.
